Home of the shoe manufacturing industry and the Rossendale Valley slate industry during the 19th century and into the late 20th century Rossendale enjoyed prosperity and fame for over a hundred years. when the railways closed so did many of the industries which had kept the region in the forefront of the industrial revolution in the UK.
The Rossendale Valley really begins with Risingbridge and Haslingden on its northern tip and Edenfield and Ramsbottom at its southern most point to the east are the mill towns of Waterfoot and Bacup perhaps the best known.
To the west are the West Pennine Moors and the towns of Blackburn and Darwen, these are not regionally classed as parts of the Rossendale Valley.
Life within the valley has changed dramatically since the late seventies, once the home of thriving small manufacturing and retail businesses who both served and employed the local population now larger retail chains dominate the high streets and many of the smaller retail outlets have either been forced to close due to the low prices of the supper stores and their ever increasing product ranges, and seeing the ever increasing rents on their premises whilst profits are constantly eroded.
Now only a hand full of manufacturing jobs still exist and even these are under constant threat from cheaper goods from the far East and Asia.
Many who live in the valley region now commute to Manchester, Yorkshire or north to Preston and the surrounding large towns and cities, and work in the service industries.
Its not all bad news however many smaller types of companies have flourished providing many of the day to day requirements of the local population, plumbers, accountancy companies, butchers and speciality products.
The valley boosts its very own ski centre in Rawtenstall, and some of the very best architecture of the industrial revolution.
Its inhabitants are friendly, warm and open, the surrounding Pennine Moors are breathtaking, whether in the midst of winter or the most glorious of summers.
BUT WE NEED MORE …… ! For Our Children ………………
Why not visit the HALO overlooking Haslingden, constructed on the site of one of the oldest slate quarries the HALO shimmers in its fluorescent glow during the long winter nights, and provides a fantastic panoramic view of the valley stretching for miles on a summers day, bring along a picnic and the children.
Take the old shoe trail along the valley and enjoy the views and history of the region. Visit the market of Rawtenstall or Haslingden which dates back to 1676 when King Charles II granted the right to the town to have its own market place. Visit the textile museum of Helmshore and the old mill still producing goods today.
And don't forget to take the kids on the East Lancs Railway for a fantastic trip back in to the past with the steam engines, the views as you move through the valley and the nostalgia of the stations in Rawtenstall, Ramsbottom and Bury.
Today the valley’s success is in the hands of a small number of companies and the multinational organisations who provide services to the regions population.
But that has to change, everyday entrepreneurs in the region have the vision and the will, to regenerate the region, and breath new life and expand the work force, its not easy in to days economic climate, and the government, banks and local authorities are always ready to applaud but concrete initiatives are few and lack any real enthusiasm.
It is our profound belief that the people of this region given the correct support from central government and the regional development agencies and the banks can once again bring prosperity and jobs too everyone in the region.
We at Web Cats Design Studio, and those we work with … !
